Hector’s rapid rise to fame came following his appearance in several TV commercials for Vitality Health Insurance. He appeared alongside olympic gold medalist Jessica Ennis-Hill and former rugby England player Jonny Wilkinson. The commercials were initially aired throughout the 2015 World Rugby tournament and continue on to the present day. Hector has also appeared in commercials for Western Union, Wrenn Kitchens and NexGard.

Hector is a topic of conversation wherever I go. So many people love him, some who’ve never even met him but just follow him on social media. Once, a lady in the street stopped us to admire him and tell us about her Dachshund. When she learnt that Hector was the dog in her favourite TV commercial he started to cry with joy!

Frequently Asked Questions

Depending on the work there is the possibility that you will be able to come on set. Celebrities are not always present but there’s just the chance that someone you know might be there!

Superstar dogs are often required to perform a wide range of tasks and tricks such as putting their paws over their eyes, lying down and shutting their eyes on command, standing up on their back legs and so on. To be selected for a film or TV role your dog will need to be able to demonstrate that they can perform a wide range of tricks, as well as be capable of learning new tricks quickly.

Dogs On Camera owner, Sandra Strong, also runs Perfect Dog, a dog training school based in London. She provides a range of classes where you can teach your dog the skills required for working on set.

The types of dogs used range greatly. It depends on the storyline and what that demands the dog to do. Some breeds are easier to train that others and that may mean picking one dog over another.

Some breeds and colours are more popular for starring roles. For a family movie, which most dog movies are, a friendly or cute looking dog is more likely to get the starring role. The most popular colors are tan, brown, tan-white-black with black and darker colored dogs being less likely to land a starring role. That said, all breeds, sizes and colors of dog are used in some way or other.

Ability is not always the overriding factor. Appearance is very important when choosing a dog for a role. The casting director may know exactly what they are looking for, or when they see a dog they will know that’s the one. Sometime they want an elegant dog, other times a scruff one.

Most assignments between 4-8 hours. If your dog is fortunately enough to be selected for a film or TV series they may be required for several weeks, depending on their role. You will need to have the time available to be take your dog to productions at relatively short notice.
